Coliseum Nightclub 2520 S. Miami Rd., Ft. Lauderdale, Florida

“The Coliseum” is Fort Lauderdale’s newest gay mega dance club. Located in the same unlikely neighborhood as the “Copa” adjacent to Port Everglades, “The Coliseum” is a serious contender for the Friday and Saturday night dance crowds.

Located in the former location of “Desperado’s”, a straight country line dancing establishment, and managed by a lot of the same people that ran “The Pier” (recently closed), “The Coliseum” is equipped to handle huge crowds.

The club is split into three main sections; the dance hall, the pool hall, and the Pompeian lounge.

dot_clear.gif (43 bytes) The main attraction here is the dance hall, which is complete with flanking stepped bars on either side with seating areas behind them. A huge balcony / second level, overhangs the dance floor and provides a great viewing location. A large and ample stage is set up at one end of the horseshoe-shaped wooden dance floor. A large DJ booth hovers above the stage and is very visible, but slightly inaccessible. A massive mirrored ball hovers above the dance floor and is supported by an intricate network of metal joists that create almost a tee pee effect.

The lighting system is typical with the exception of the pyrotechnics that light up the dance floor and the stage with occasional explosions of light (indoor fireworks!). The effect is very cool as a shower of sparks is extinguished on the backs of the sweaty shirtless dancers!

The sound system here is massive but can get a little loud at times. Overall there is plenty of wattage to pump through the chest of any club goer.

Some Roman inspired décor is present with wall murals and huge Doric columns flanking the stage, but this club does not rely on themed gimmicks to please its crowd.

DJ Miik was spinning the night we attended and we applaud his ability to keep us entertained the entire evening. Playing mostly what we would consider “Melodic House”, DJ Miik’s set contained a lot of Thunderpuss remixes and mostly vocals.

“The Coliseum” is grand scale nightclubbing and done very well.
